Kids in Camaguey

Children at the dedication of the Teferet Israel synagogue at Camaguey, Cuba, on January 10, 1999. The T-shirts were sent by the children of Kol Ami as part of a recent Mitzvah Day activity. Congregation Kol Ami "adopted" the Camaguey Jewish community in1995; since then, more than 20 Kol Ami members have visited, bringing material and spiritual support to the small community of about 27 Jewish families.

We thank our brothers from KOL AMI for their help Teferet Israel, a Sephardic congregation, was founded in 1929, but became inactive in 1960 after religious practice was suppressed by the Castro government. The original building was nationalized, and now houses several families. The new site is a large house by Cuban standards, and has been redesigned for Jewish community activities and worship services. Plaques in the synagogue honor the help from the Joint Distribution Committee, which maintains a presence in Cuba, and from Congregation Kol Ami. (Photos by Merle Salkin)
